Research

Current interest includes the developement of a variety of surface sensitive techniques to study clean and adsorbate covered surfaces and interfaces and the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials down to the atomic lenght scales.
Research activity is focussed on nanoscience, nanotechnology, nanocatalysis, structure and reactivity of clean, adsorbate-covered, alloy surfaces and on nanoclusters properties.
Since 2008 the interest has moved to GRAPHENE and other 2D MATERIALS by combining synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopies with advanced DFT calculations for revealing the peculiar relationshpip between the structural and the physical/chemical properties of these materials.

Teaching

Since 2001 he is responsible of the course "Laboratory of Condensed Matter Physics" for the master students in Physics at the University of Trieste.
From 2011 he is also responsible of the first part of the course "Fundamentals of Surface Physics".
He is  involved as a teacher in several Schools at national and international level.
He has supervised 16 PhD students and 22 master students in Physics.
